About Routavio
Routavio is an independent multimodal route-planning project that weighs different modes of transport within a single journey.
The aim is to build workable alternative routes by bringing flight, train, bus and ferry options together, above all for cities that are hard to reach directly.
Door to door
Flight, train, bus and ferry can be different legs of the same journey. Routavio looks at the place you actually want to reach, not only at the nearest airport.
How routes are ranked
Options are ranked on measurable criteria: price, total duration, number of transfers and the shape of the route.
Where the data comes from
Times, prices and connections come from several different data sources. Rail and public transport data can draw on standardised transport data formats such as GTFS, while flights can draw on live or cached price signals. Wherever possible, the result says whether a figure is live, cached or estimated.
We do not take bookings
Routavio sells no tickets, takes no payments and reserves no seats. Bookings are completed on the independent third-party providers' own sites.
The problem we are working on
On many real journeys, the most useful route is not simply a flight into the airport closest to your destination.
Flying to a nearby hub and finishing the trip by train, bus or another mode can produce better alternatives on time, on cost or on the number of transfers.
Routavio sets out to weigh these alternative connections inside a single route.
How it works
Routavio brings flight, train, bus and ferry options together to build door-to-door route alternatives.
The routes it builds are compared on criteria such as duration, price, number of transfers and connection structure.
When you choose to go ahead with an option, you are sent to the site of the relevant independent third-party provider. Booking and payment are handled entirely by that provider.
